A gamer is a devoted player of electronic games, especially on machines especially designed for such games and, in a more recent trend, over the Internet. Gamers are often seen as lazy people who do nothing but sit at home and play on their computers for hours and hours on end. We’ve always been seen in a negative manner, other than those who are part of the online gaming social setting. Due to this negative stereotype revolving around us gamers, I always tried to keep my hobby a secret. In the process, the looking glass self concept always made me picture a lot of judgement if my friends found out about my addiction. This forced me to re-socialize between my two identities, the one my friends knew, and the one my online friends knew. It also forced me to maintain face in any social situation in person, where I could be myself online. Online gaming gave me a social setting where I could be myself and gain a strong sense of social solidarity. Part 1: Description of the social group created by online gamers.
